Most of the following notes was made to help the television service
engineers speed up the time taken to tune in television and video
recorders, and also set other things like, the personal preference
(P.P.) level. Some were very easy to "work out" that
you would not need these notes, however, if you are not sure, and
there is a fault on the set, valuable time can be wasted trying out
different combinations before one comes to the conclusion that there
must be a fault on the appliance.
Most of these notes were made by trying out different combinations,
writing them down, then trying out again from the notes to see if I
had worked them out correct. Most times, If I had to do another
"tune in" after a few weeks the notes paid for it's
self.
Television Service Engineers living in rural New Zealand should also
find these notes handy and may be able to talk customers though a
television or video recorder set up without have to waste time and
money on a service call, therefore any feedback is welcome, not for
me as this gives me more work to do, but for them.
Eric Richards.

Personal Preference note:
The colour level can be adjusted and memorized at different
levels from program to program, I was totality confused one
day when I had to tune in a second video to SCART input and
could only get a monochrome picture, that SCART program input
was set at minimum colour level.
Also be careful that the program number have a wide fine tune
range, when you are searching for the station and you are not
to sure where the station is, it can quite easy be lost. In
that case you might have to step though the channels one by
one and adjust the fine tune up and down until you find it.

Did you know all PAL DVD players will also play NTSC DVD
without any problem.
Did you know when your DVD player stops playing DVD's, more
than likely it will still continue to play Audio CD's. So when you
replace that old DVD player with a new one rewire the old one
up to the stereo system.
Did you know if you have a universal remote that night have say
five devise options like two TV buttons, a VCR, and two AUX
buttons, if you use this remote for just one TV try putting the
TV code into the VCR and the AUX options and see if the remote
will still work the TV on the other three device options. I found
it a great nuisance going to change stations and the remote would
not work until I had to press either TV 1 or TV 2 device option
on the remote before the remote would work again. So I had a
idea one day I put the TV code into VCR, AUX 1 & AUX 2 then
never had anymore trouble having to press the TV 1 or TV 2
button again.
These notes about tuning may or may not help your tuning problem, So read on if there is no help above. Let me explain a few technical terms, for the viewer point of view they never need to talk about "channel" I hope that if you take the advice of these notes you should be able to have a more intelligent conversation with your service department repairing your television or video recorder.
CHANNEL This not a television station it is part of the "electromagnetic spectrum" if you look on the New Zealand channel allocation table you will see that channel 1 starts at 44 Mega Hertz and goes to 51 Mega Hertz, the reason is most New Zealanders will have Television one on channel 2, while other parts of the country will have TV 1 on channel 1 or maybe some other channel. Otherwise it is a bit like a radio station saying "96 FM" is on 98.4 Mega Hertz.
CHANNEL BUTTONS, on the television sets have been wrongly labelled by most television manufactures and should have been called the PROGRAM button, you press that button to change the television program.
A good idea when you first get a television is to put TV 1 on program numbers 1, 11, 21, 31, ... TV 2 on 2, 12, 22, ... and so on, if your main viewing program number gets lost by some household fiddler you always have another program number to go to before you find the instruction book, that should be saved away just in case.
One of the problems with some modern televisions is they will only
do a automatic tune. Which is not so much a problem, the problem is
they pick up radio interference rubbish in-between the television
stations, So you might have program one has rubbish, program two has
TV1, program three and four has rubbish, program five has TV2,
program six has TV3, and so on .... Don't you
find that annoying? Don't you think it would be better if TV1 was
on program 1, TV2 on 2 TV3 on 3.
There is a solution if you put a aerial attenuator in series with the
aerial lead, you might need something like 30 db or use a variable
attenuator, this will reduce the signal level of the main television
stations to a snowy level (almost un-watchable), but the radio
interference will also be reduced to a level that will not make the
television set store anything other than the weak television
stations. Then remove the attenuator when you have finished the
tuning.
NEVER PUT POT PLANTS THAT NEED WATERING ON TOP OF THE TELEVISION SET...
This is a common problem were the plant is sometimes knocked
over and water from the pot goes into the television set doing costly
damage. If this does happen to you turn off the television, let the
television dry out before you use it again, if it works sell it and get
a new television set.
